What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive pediatric dentistry focuses on helping children avoid cavities and dental problems before they start. At Minimint Pediatric Dentistry, we use modern, minimally invasive techniques and personalized prevention plans tailored to your child’s risk level. Whether it’s their first visit or a regular check-up, we’re here to make sure every child has the best possible foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. We also take extra care to educate parents with supportive resources.

The Benefits of Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the foundation of lifelong oral health. By catching small issues early, guiding good habits, and using safe, evidence-based techniques, we help your child avoid discomfort and reduce the need for future treatment.

Lower risk of cavities and dental emergencies

Routine checkups and preventive treatments help protect your child from decay and detect issues early, before they become bigger problems.

Personalized care at every stage

Every child’s needs are different — our prevention plans reflect their age, cavity risk, and comfort level.

Builds Lifelong Healthy Habits

Starting preventive care early helps children learn the importance of oral hygiene, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Our Preventive Treatments

Exams

Regular exams are the cornerstone of prevention. Dr. Robus uses a compassionate, thorough approach to evaluate your child’s teeth, gums, and growth.

Iodine Application

Used as part of our cavity prevention strategy, iodine decreases the activity of cavity causing bacteria and enhances the effectiveness of fluoride. It is especially useful for kids who are at very high risk of developing cavities.

Cleanings

Professional cleanings remove plaque, polish teeth, and keep your child’s smile sparkling. Our gentle team will explain every step and keep things fun, so kids feel comfortable and proud of their healthy habits.

Infant & Toddler Visits

We welcome babies for their first dental visit by age 1. These early visits focus on parent education, gentle screening, and establishing a positive dental experience from the start.

Digital X-rays

We follow the ALARA principle — as low as reasonably achievable — when it comes to x-rays. We recommend the first set of x-rays at age 4 and a half.

Fluoride & Fluoride Alternatives

Fluoride is a proven, safe way to strengthen enamel and prevent decay. We also offer effective non-fluoride alternatives and will work with you to choose the right approach for your child.

Dental Sealants

Sealants act like a shield, covering the grooves in your child’s back teeth to prevent food and bacteria from causing cavities. Application is fast, painless, and highly effective.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

SDF is a non-invasive option used to stop early cavities in their tracks. It’s ideal for younger patients or those who aren’t ready for restorative care, and it’s a key part of our minimally invasive toolkit.

Caries Risk Assessment

We assess every child’s individual risk for developing cavities based on their oral health history, habits, and exam findings. This helps guide everything from x-ray timing to personalized home care.

Home Care Education

From brushing techniques to balanced nutrition, we guide both kids and parents on how to build great habits at home. We believe education is most effective when it’s supportive, not overwhelming — and we love empowering families with practical tips that stick.

Frequently
 asked
 questions

Curious about how preventive care works at Minimint Pediatric Dentistry? Here are a few of the most common questions we hear from parents.

When should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting.

What is your policy on X-rays?

At Minimint Pediatric Dentistry, we follow the ALARA principle — “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” — to keep radiation exposure to a minimum while still providing the best care for your child. Dental X-rays are extremely low in radiation and safe, but we believe they should only be taken when necessary. We use digital imaging and ensure our team is highly trained to capture the most information with the least exposure possible. For most children at low risk for cavities, we aim to take the first set of X-rays around age 4.5, which helps us check for cavities between teeth, missing or extra teeth, and other developmental concerns. Annual X-rays are recommended in most cases, though we may extend the interval to 18–24 months for kids with a consistent history of low cavity risk. X-rays may be taken earlier if there are signs of a problem — such as injury, tooth pain, gum swelling, visible spots on teeth, or unusual eruption patterns. Your child's safety is our top priority.

What is your policy on fluoride?

At Minimint Pediatric Dentistry, we follow evidence-based guidelines that show fluoride is a safe and highly effective way to prevent cavities in children. When used as recommended, fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. We understand that every family has unique preferences, so we also offer effective, non-fluoride alternatives as part of our prevention plans. This allows parents to choose the option that best aligns with their child’s needs while still supporting strong, healthy smiles.
